What is Fan Token?

Glossary · SportFi

A fan token is a utility token issued by a sports club (via platforms like Socios.com on Chiliz Chain) that grants engagement rights — polls, rewards, experiences — to holders. It is not equity: it carries no ownership, dividends, or claim on club revenue, and its price reflects fan demand, not club financials.

Also called: fan tokens · socios fan token · club token · chiliz fan token

What a fan token actually gives you

Clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), FC Barcelona (BAR), and Juventus (JUV) issue fan tokens on Chiliz Chain. Holders vote in club polls (kit designs, bus liveries, friendly-match lineups), unlock rewards and experiences, and access token-gated content. The token is consumed or staked inside the Socios app — its function is engagement, not investment.

On-chain, official fan-token supply is structurally concentrated rather than widely distributed: the largest holders are typically exchange custody wallets and the club or issuer treasury, and most trading happens on centralized exchanges rather than on-chain. The current top-10 concentration per token is read live from Chiliz Chain on the SportFi chain desk — no figure is quoted here, because concentration moves and a number printed in a definition would be stale the day after it was written.

Fan token vs equity token

The distinction matters legally and financially. A fan token is a utility asset — buying one is closer to buying a membership than a share. An equity token (such as the announced Socios Equity Token built with Securitize) is a regulated security that represents actual ownership or economic rights. The two can exist for the same club and are completely different instruments. TxOnChain classifies every sport token by claim class and never mixes the two.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fan token an investment in the club?

No. Fan tokens grant engagement utility — votes, rewards, experiences — not ownership, dividends, or any claim on club revenue. Price is driven by fan demand and market speculation, not club financial performance.

Which chain do fan tokens live on?

Most official Socios fan tokens are issued on Chiliz Chain (mainnet id 88888), an EVM chain purpose-built for sport and entertainment tokenization. They also trade on centralized exchanges.
