What is CAP-20?

Glossary · SportFi

CAP-20 is Chiliz Chain's fungible-token standard, functionally equivalent to ERC-20 on an EVM chain. Official Socios fan tokens are issued as CAP-20 tokens on Chiliz mainnet (chain id 88888), with CHZ paid as gas. The standard carries no ownership or revenue rights — those depend on the instrument, never on the token format.

What the standard does and does not say

CAP-20 defines balances, transfers, approvals and supply — the same surface as ERC-20, which is why standard EVM tooling and explorers read Chiliz tokens without modification. It is a container format. A club's fan token and any other CAP-20 asset share one interface while being entirely different instruments, so the standard is never evidence of what a token entitles you to.

Reading CAP-20 supply honestly

Because the interface is ERC-20-compatible, holders, transfers and supply can be read directly from Chiliz Chain through the Chiliscan API rather than taken from an aggregator. That matters on this chain in particular: most fan-token volume executes on centralised exchanges, so the on-chain tape is sparse and top-wallet concentration is high — usually exchange custody and club treasury rather than distributed retail holding.

Frequently asked questions

Is CAP-20 the same as ERC-20?

Functionally yes — the same token interface on an EVM chain, which is why ERC-20 tooling works against Chiliz Chain. The difference is the network, not the standard's surface.

Does a CAP-20 token give me a stake in a club?

No. The standard is a token format. Fan tokens issued as CAP-20 are utility instruments with no ownership, dividend or revenue claim.
