What is Real-World Asset (RWA)?

Glossary · RWA

A real-world asset (RWA) in crypto is an off-chain asset — a Treasury bill, equity, fund, bond, commodity, or property — represented as a blockchain token. Tokenization puts ownership or economic exposure on-chain so the asset can settle, transfer, and be used as collateral 24/7.

What gets tokenized

The largest RWA category by on-chain value is tokenized US Treasuries and money-market funds — BlackRock's BUIDL, Ondo's OUSG and USDY, and Franklin Templeton's BENJI. Other categories include tokenized equities (Backed's xStocks, Ondo Global Markets), private credit, commodities such as tokenized gold (PAXG, XAUT), and real estate.

Each token is issued against the off-chain asset held in custody or held by a regulated issuer, and several use Chainlink Proof-of-Reserve to attest backing on-chain.

Why RWA tokenization matters

Tokenization can compress settlement from days (T+1/T+2) to seconds, enable fractional access, make assets composable with on-chain finance, and add transparency. The on-chain RWA market has grown to multiple billions of dollars in tracked value, and forecasts from BCG, Standard Chartered, and Citi project trillions of dollars of tokenized assets by 2030.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an RWA and a stablecoin?

A stablecoin is itself a narrow RWA — a tokenized claim on cash and reserves. The broader term RWA usually refers to tokenized yield-bearing or equity assets such as Treasuries, funds, and stocks.

Is RWA tokenization regulated?

It depends on the asset and jurisdiction. Tokenized securities are generally treated as securities and fall under existing securities rules; regulators including the SEC, MAS, and others have issued guidance.
