What is Shares Multiplier?

Glossary · Pricing

The shares multiplier is how many underlying shares one token represents. Ondo Global Markets publishes it per asset as sharesMultiplier, and NAV per token equals the underlying share price multiplied by it. Where the multiplier is above 1, the token price is a multiple of the share price — so comparing a token quote directly against the stock quote invents a premium that does not exist.

Also called: sharesMultiplier · shares per token · multi-share token · tokenized stock multiplier

Formula

NAV per token = underlying share price × sharesMultiplier

premium (bps) = (token price − NAV) ÷ NAV × 10,000

A multiplier of 2.4 against an $800 share gives a $1,920 NAV per token.

Why the multiplier exists

Issuers size a token to a useful unit rather than forcing a strict one-token-one-share mapping. A multiplier above 1 bundles several shares into a single token; a multiplier below 1 splits a high-priced share into a fraction. Either way the multiplier is the conversion factor between the equity market's unit and the token's unit, and it is published per asset rather than assumed — two tokens from the same issuer can carry different multipliers.

The mistake it causes

The most common tokenized-equity data error is reading a multi-share token's price as a share price and reporting a several-hundred-percent premium. Deriving NAV as underlying price × multiplier before computing anything keeps the premium column in basis points instead of exploding. If a dashboard shows a token trading at many times the stock quote, check the multiplier before checking the peg — and treat an unexplained multiplier change as a data event to verify, not a market move.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a token price into a share price?

Divide the token price by the shares multiplier. A token quoted at $1,920 with a multiplier of 2.4 is priced at $800 per underlying share.

Does the shares multiplier change?

It can. Issuers adjust it to mirror corporate actions such as stock splits, so it should be read live from the issuer's feed rather than cached and assumed constant.
